Wayne Rooney hammers glass over VAR – Three things you may have missed in Everton win

Everton fans are still celebrating after Wednesday’s (24 April) hugely impressive – and very rare – victory against Liverpool.

Goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin earned the Toffees their first Goodison park win over Liverpool since 2010.

As the dust settles on a win that all but preserves Everton’s Premier League status, Goodison News picks out three things you may have missed.

Wayne Rooney gives supporters the heads-up

Having already had a penalty in their favour overturned, VAR once again threatened to ruin Everton’s celebrations when Branthwaite scored.

However, the goal was allowed to stand following a check and Rooney – working as a pundit for Sky Sports – was quick to let fans know.

As pointed out by @RoyalEverton on X [25 April]: “Rooney was banging on the window to tell fans it was a goal – classic.” Rooney may have played for and managed numerous other clubs in his career, but he remains an Evertonian at heart.

Liverpool fans make early Goodison Park exit

Everton fans have become accustomed to hearing the Liverpool fans staying behind and celebrating victories at Goodison down the years.

Not this time. Rather than stay behind to at least show some support to their players, the visiting supporters exiting the ground in no time at all.

@DixiReal shared an image on X [24 April] captioned “Loyalty”, showing a completely empty away end while the home stands were still rammed.

It is easy to support your side when things are going well, but it is when things are not going so well that supporters must show true faith.

Vitalii Mykolenko image a concern

On a night of many positives for Everton, the one negative was the sight of Mykolenko hobbling down the tunnel after sustaining an injury.

The Ukraine international was replaced at half-time and, worryingly, was later pictured on crutches and with a protective boot on.

Sean Dyche confirmed after the game that the Toffees would wait until at least Thursday (25 April) before evaluating the damage.

But Mykolenko, who was replaced by Ashley Young, now seems certain to miss the remaining month or so of the campaign if this image is anything to go by.
