Unai Emery was ‘going mad’ at £17m Aston Villa player in injury time vs Liverpool
Clinton Morrison noticed that Unai Emery was losing his rag at one Aston Villa player in injury time against Liverpool.
Villa fought back from a two-goal deficit to draw 3-3 with Liverpool last night, giving them a major boost in the top-four race.
They are now firmly in the top four and well-placed to qualify for the illustrious Champions League after a stellar season under Unai Emery’s leadership.
Since taking over from Steven Gerrard in October 2022, the Spaniard has completely changed the fortunes around at Villa Park.
Last night’s display was a little suspect, though, particularly defensively and Emery wasn’t happy with one of his players for something he did in stoppage time.
Clinton Morrison noticed Unai Emery ‘going mad’ at Emiliano Martinez
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 LIve’s Monday Night Club, Morrison noticed Emery ‘going mad’ at his goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for wasting time towards the end, rather than going for the winner.
“They are pushing for the winner but not Martinez because when he’s getting the ball in his hands, he’s going down on the floor but Unai Emery is going mad, saying ‘no, get it forward’,” the former Crystal Palace striker said.
Indeed, a win against The Reds would’ve sealed qualification to the Champions League, which is presumably why Emery was so desperate to get the winner.
Though, evidently, Martinez differed in his opinion and thought it was sensible to play out for the point, which puts them on the verge of achieving their goal.
Aston Villa’s goal may be sealed tonight
Aston Villa’s hopes of achieving a top-four finish may be sealed this evening if Tottenham Hotspur fail to defeat Manchester City.
Otherwise, it will go down to the final day, with Villa only needing a point against Crystal Palace realistically, as they have a far superior goal difference to Spurs.
