Everton have two ‘very strong’ points deduction arguments – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the club’s points deduction appeal will centre around double jeopardy and lost sponsorship money.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed both arguments are “very strong”.

The Premier League confirmed last week (19 April) that the outcome of Everton’s appeal will be announced before the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

Everton have requested another hearing into their three-point deduction for a second breach of the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The Toffees claim their punishment should be minimal as they have already been docked six points for breaching PSR in the period leading up to the 2021-22 campaign.

They also feel mitigation should be granted for the loss of sponsorship money from oligarch Alisher Usmanov and his USM company – which was forced to cut ties with the club following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think the arguments will centre around the double jeopardy angle.

“Everton are likely to suggest it goes beyond the original mitigation they were given in the original verdict.

“That will form a major part of the arguments.

“They will also likely want more credit for the sponsorship money lost due to the Ukraine war.

“Both of those points, I believe, are still very strong.

“One commission has found them valid, and one hasn’t. Maybe it could be third time lucky, and we win 2-1.”

In other news, Everton could enter administration after new development.
