National media reacts to Jordan Pickford display as Everton star features in England win
Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was praised by the national media for some “very important moments” in England’s win over the Netherlands at Euro 2024.
The print editions of the Daily Mail (11 July, page 59) and Daily Mirror (11 July, page 77) rated the 30-year-old Toffees stopper at 6.5 and 7/10 respectively following the Three Lions’ 2-1 victory in Dortmund.
Pickford conceded inside seven minutes to the Oranje’s Xavi Simons, but made a vital save in the latter stages to keep out Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, just a few minutes before Ollie Watkins won it for England.
Having seen Gareth Southgate’s side reach a second consecutive Euros final, Pickford’s late save was seen as a “very important moment” (Daily Mail), despite him being a “spectator” (Daily Mirror) for much of the match otherwise.
Jordan Pickford England performances no surprise to Everton fans
Pickford has been making crucial save after crucial save on both the club and international stage for many a year now, with his stop to deny Van Dijk the latest of several big moments for the Three Lions.
Toffees fans in particular will be delighted that it was Liverpool’s captain of all players with that spurned chance to win it for the Dutch, and even happier that their number one kept him at bay.
