I can’t belive this will happen: Breaking down Yankees’ 40 players set to leave today unfailingly.

NEW YORK — In just over one week, the Yankees’ most disappointing season in recent memory will be in the books.

A team synonymous with winning won’t be bracing for another shot at a deep playoff run. They’ll be packing up for what’s poised to be an eventful winter.

The way the Yankees attack the open market and how they tweak their roster with trades could be the difference in setting the table for a bounce-back season or more mediocrity. Before diving into what moves the Yankees will make and which new faces will have a locker at George M. Steinbrenner Field next spring, however, let’s look internally.

There are currently 50 players associated with the Yankees roster. That includes the 28 players on the Yankees’ active roster, a dozen additional pieces that are either injured or eligible for a promotion in the minors on the 40-man roster, eight assets on the 60-day injured list and two on the restricted list.

Here’s a breakdown of every name on that list, with some analysis on each player’s season and what’s next.

Starting pitchers

Gerrit Cole, RHP: If there’s any reason to look back at this season fondly for the Yankees, it’s Cole’s performance. He’s the favorite to win the first Cy Young Award of his career, putting together one of his best seasons to date. As much as Cole’s consistency and dominance should be celebrated, it was wasted this summer, part of a starting rotation that fell miles short of expectations

Carlos Rodón, LHP: Rodón is the first of many disappointments on this list. The left-hander hasn’t earned his pinstripes yet, spending the vast majority of his first season on the Yankees either on the injured list or pitching poorly. The way Rodón is throwing the ball here in September is encouraging — he’s starting to flash more of that overpowering, ace-caliber stuff — but he has plenty of work to do in terms of winning over Yankees fans after signing his $162 million contract. That starts with staying healthy next spring.
