It was obvious that the goal of adding a young, gifted player was to increase depth. Despite having little NBA experience, Springer impressed the Celtics enough to acquire him in exchange for a second-round pick from the 76ers, their rivals in the same division. Obviously, the Sixers thought otherwise of Springer, as he was selected 28th overall in the 2021 draft. Daryl Morey, president of the 76ers, even went so far as to subtly criticize Springer as he was leaving the team. When analyzing the trade of Springer, Morey stated that the Sixers would be better off with a second-round pick in the near future than with his long-term schedule. In fairness, he did praise Springer’s view for the future. According to Sam DiGiovanni, Morey stated, “We had to consider the likelihood that Jaden Springer, who I believe has a fantastic future, can help our playoff rotation in the next one, two, or three years. And what are our chances of benefiting from a second-round pick? In our opinion, the second-round selection was more beneficial to us.  Boston President Brad Stevens emphasized that Springer still has a lot of maturing to do in his future remarks on the player. Interestingly, though, he brought up the fact that he is among the youngest people in his draft class at just 21 years old. He stated that there is a benefit to having a young third-year player, given that the Celtics’ prospect assessments frequently feature older players around the end of the first round or in the second. When it came to their transactions, the Celtics also considered the future. Springer is not a rental because he is signed through the following year on his rookie-scale contract. The Celtics will keep Xavier Tillman’s Bird Rights even though he will soon be eligible for unrestricted free agency.
