In an attempt to secure a contract extension this summer, Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton was one of several players who did not show up for optional workouts this week.
George Paton, general manager, doesn’t appear to be too concerned about his top wide receiver refusing to work out early in the offseason.
According to Denver Post reporter Gabriel Parker, Paton stated, “It’s 100 percent voluntary.” “This is the first week of the program for the offseason. Courtland has spoken with Sean [Payton]. I spoke with Courtland. We’ll just leave it at that; he’s in a good place.”
Sutton has been the focus of multiple trade speculations since choosing not to take part in Denver’s optional offseason program, and with good reason. His four-year, $60 million deal is up in two years, but only $2 million of that is guaranteed.
In addition, the Broncos appear to be starting over after sending wide receiver Jerry Jeudy to the Browns earlier in the summer and cutting quarterback Russell Wilson.
This season, Sutton will turn 29. It is unlikely that he will be on the squad when it returns to competition, which is why many think Denver would be wise to get him for as much as possible.
Other than Sutton, the team doesn’t have much talent at wide receiver. The room is highlighted by Josh Reynolds, who recently signed a free agent contract with the organization, Marvin Mims Jr., a 2023 second-round pick, and Tim Patrick, who suffered an Achilles tear last season.
The Broncos must surround the rookie quarterback with at least some talent if they intend to select a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft the following week.
Denver is obviously in a tough situation and might not even be sure what it wants to do at this point. Paton withheld information regarding the team’s negotiations with Sutton.
Although Paton appeared to dampen trade rumors involving Sutton, he did not totally rule them out.
Last season, Sutton recorded a career-high 10 touchdowns and 772 yards on 59 receptions.
