Why 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings was extended

This previous week, the San Francisco 49ers extended the contract of a wide receiver.

It was not Brandon Aiyuk, either. Nothing at all has changed in that regard. Jauan Jennings, a wide receiver with the 49ers, inked a two-year contract worth $15.4 million, with $10.5 million guaranteed.

Given that Jennings isn’t a top priority, this extension seems impromptu. Not much of a highlighted player, he’s the third-best receiver on the team. In 2023, Jennings recorded 19 receptions for 265 yards and one score. That seems a bit excessive given how much he was given.

But Jennings’ contribution to the 49ers goes much beyond his numbers. His blocking prowess, his decisiveness in converting on first downs, and his

It made perfect sense for the 49ers to extend him in light of those three beneficial aspects of the team. And instead of playing on the restricted free agent tendered deal that he was initially scheduled to play on, Jennings most definitely deserves that.

Consequently, he never signed it. His contract was only set in stone for the 2024 season, and his salary would be less than $5 million. He now receives a pay increase and a contract extension of one more year. It all works out because the 49ers also gain because they reduced Jennings’ cap number this season.

The 49ers made a great decision by locking up a reliable receiver.
