Mark Robins has spoken about Matty Godden’s future amid reports that League One Charlton Athletic are interested in the striker’s services this summer.
The 32-year-old still has a year left to run on his current contract but has slipped down the pecking order during the second half of the season when Ellis Simms and Haji Wright have come to the fore, with 19 goals apiece in all competitions, leaving Godden to being a regular bit-part player from the bench.
The former Peterborough United striker joined the Sky Blues in the summer of 2019, becoming what Robins called his ‘talisman’ as he helped the club rise up from League One to become an established Championship outfit that made the play-off final last year. And although he signed a new two year extension to his contract last summer and started the 2023/24 campaign strongly, scoring six goals in his first eight games, questions now remain about his future in the coming transfer window.
Asked about the speculation by CoventryLive, and whether the time has come where the player has to ask questions and the club have to look at what’s best moving forward, Robins said: “If we’re generalising and not talking about Matty, of course there’s a time when things move and change. But, ultimately, Matty is still under contract and at the moment nothing’s happening.”
The manager didn’t however, rule out any movement, adding: “It’s early doors and regardless of anything, decisions are made and I go back to what I said earlier in that decisions are always made in the best interests of the football club, first and foremost, and if everything fits then…
“Again, I am not talking about any individual, but generally, they either stay or they move on, and generally that happens in the right way and manner, and that will continue to be the case.”
