West Ham United have held talks with Ivan Toney’s representatives about a potential summer transfer from Brentford, according to HITC.
Writing on their website (27 March), the news outlet report that Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are also interested in a deal for the 28-year-old England international this summer.
But the Hammers have also “thrown their hat into the ring” for the former Newcastle striker and have held talks with his agents about a transfer across London.
“HITC also understands that West Ham United have thrown their hat into the ring for Toney and have made it known to his representatives that they hold an interest in the England man,” they wrote.
West Ham have been lacking a genuine goalscorer in the number nine position for several years, although they have supplemented that issue by signing goalscoring wingers.
But bringing in a legitimate goal threat in Toney, who has been described as “special” by Thomas Frank, to lead the line ahead of talent like Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus could be what takes this team to the next level.
David Moyes is known to like a physical striker who can hold the ball up and link with his midfielders and Toney has that ability.
But if Moyes isn’t in charge next season, Toney also has the skillset to be able to adapt to a different role and with several top strikers expected to be on the move this summer it could open the door for the Hammers.
The transfer fee is expected to be high, but stranger things have happened in football and Toney is the type of player who would be loved in east London so this is one to keep an eye on.
