West Ham plans to sign a “brilliant” manager from PL competitors

Journalist Dean Jones “would not be surprised” if West Ham move for Gary O’Neil after the work he has done at Wolves.

Former United player O’Neil has earned plenty of plaudits at Molineux since replacing Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign.

David Moyes’ future at London Stadium remains uncertain, and Jones believes O’Neil could tick plenty of boxes as a replacement.

“I think O’Neil has done a brilliant job so far, and it wouldn’t totally surprise me if West Ham did end up having to look back into the Premier League if that was the sort of manager that did interest them from the top flight,” he told GiveMeSport [23 February].

Moyes confirmed on Friday (23 February) that he has been offered a new deal, but he has yet to decide if he will stay on.

The managerial situation at London Stadium has caused a divide among the fanbase and there will not be clarity for a while longer yet.

With Moyes unlikely to make a decision one way or another for another few months, it means possible managerial targets could be missed out on.

Someone like Thomas Tuchel will have no shortage of suitors once he departs Bayern Munich, for example, yet West Ham will not be in a position to make an audacious swoop as things stand.

Tuchel is a name that excites most fans, whereas O’Neil’s probably does not. In fairness, Wolves fans felt the same but he has done a very good job there.

The big question is whether United want to gamble with their next appointment or bring in another steady option, which O’Neil very much is – or certainly looks to be.

It just goes to show that even if Moyes does go, there will then be yet more debates aplenty regarding who is the best man to take over.
