COVENTRY City have appointed former favourite George Boateng and Rhys Carr as new first team coaches as the Sky Blues continue to revamp their coaching structure.
Following the shock departure of long-term assistant coach Adi Viveash, City have acted quickly to replace his experience with former Sky Blues midfielder Boateng and Carr.
Boateng was previously assistant coach with the Ghanain national team while Carr arrives at the Sky Blues from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Coventry manager Mark Robins said: “We are very pleased to welcome George and Rhys to Coventry City.
“They both impressed us during the extensive recruitment process for this important role and each bring key skills to the football department.
“Their experience and knowledge will greatly aid our work to maximise the performance and preparation of our team, both in advance of, and on matchdays, and we are excited to begin working with them.”
Coventry’s performance director, Claire-Marie Roberts added: “George and Rhys were consistently the strongest candidates throughout our extensive selection process.
“Their respective skills will bring a new dimension to our experienced multi-disciplinary team as we work to continually enhance the development and preparation of our first-team players.”
Boateng posted on X: “I’m thrilled to announce my return to my first love in English football, Coventry City FC.
“From 1998 to 2024, it’s an honor to come back and work alongside Mark Robins and the entire staff. I want to express my gratitude to Coventry City FC for this incredible opportunity.”
Boateng returns to the Sky Blues after scoring seven goals in 57 appearances during an 18-month spell with the club as a player from 1998 to 1999 following a move from Feyenoord.
His finest moment in a City shirt saw the midfielder score twice in a 4-2 win against Aston Villa as Coventry ended their 63-wait for victory at Villa Park.
The 48-year-old later enjoyed spells with Villa, Middlesbrough and Hull City and represented the Netherlands on four occasions.
Following his retirement as a player, Boateng took on youth coach roles at Blackburn Rovers and former club Villa where he was under-18s coach and then under-23s coach.
He became Ghana’s assistant manager in May 2022 and remained in the role until the following year.
He will work alongside fellow new arrival Carr who held the role of individual development coach at Wolves.
The Welshman also worked as assistant coach at Ireland women’s national team alongside his role at Wolves and holds a UEFA A coaching licence.
Carr joined Wolves from Bristol Rovers in 2022 and has also held roles at Sheffield United, Bristol City and Cardiff City.
