Wayne Rooney rips into his players ahead of Friday match against Coventry

Coventry City can expect a backlash from Birmingham after Wayne Rooney laid into his players, telling them they need to ‘grow a pair of balls’ in a furious press conference after failing to beat Rotherham United on Saturday.

The Blues manager was enraged after an insipid display in front of owner Tom Wagner and investor Tom Brady, who made the jaunt over from the United States to watch their team play out a drab goalless draw with second from bottom Millers.

Rooney’s men, who travel to take on the Sky Blues at the CBS Arena on Friday night, were fortunate that Rotherham weren’t able to take advantage of their comedy of errors at the back to inflict further pain.

Since Rooney replaced John Eustace in October, Blues have one win, two draws and five defeats from eight games – a record which puts them at the foot of the Championship’s form table. And the former Derby County and DC United manager is tired of Blues’ players not translating their encouraging training ground performances onto the pitch.
