Trent McDuffie, the Chiefs’ CB, suggests that the offense is already looking much better than it did at this time last year.

Throughout this dynasty, the Kansas City Chiefs are renowned for having an outstanding offensive line. However, they had an exceptionally poor season on that side of the ball last year.

 

Considering that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the most gifted player to ever touch a football and head coach Andy Reid is an offensive guru, it was strange to watch the offense take a serious knock.

However, with the dip the offense took, the defense more than stepped up. They became a top-five defense in the league, and during some stretch of the schedule, you could even say they were the best defense. And, while they would love to do whatever will continue to win them Super Bowls like they have the last two seasons, improving the offense is a must.
That’s why the Chiefs drafted most of the offensive pieces they did. Their offense should easily be better, but then again, that’s not very hard to do when your offense is that bad. According to some who have been at OTAs, which started last week, the Chiefs are looking much better on that side of the ball.

“Man, they are rolling. Definitely have some weapons,” All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie said. “When I think about last year this time, I think the defense was low-key getting after that offense. We are battling this year. At least for me, a DB, going against receivers like X [Worthy] when he comes back, [Hollywood] Brown, I feel like it’s just going to sharpen my tools even more.

“Y’all saw today Pat (Mahomes) is just back there throwing it deep play after play. I think defensive-wise, the timing and just understanding what guys are really about. Mentally, just how focused you can be. When guys are rolling like that, your keys, how you’re reading things, how fast you’re doing things, everything is going to speed up. Being able to go out there and play.”

And that’s an offense that McDuffie is seeing without rookie Xavier Worthy, who is nursing a hamstring issue. Worthy will only add another layer, too, as he potentially has the best speed in the entire game. The Chiefs are certainly hoping that they will be able to bring the deep ball back.

As far as things are going in OTAs—and remember, it’s just OTAs—the Chiefs are on the right track to getting the offense where it needs to be.
