Three burning questions for the 2024 New York Giants
After one of the more frustrating seasons in recent memory, the New York Giants enter the 2024 campaign with more questions than answers.
Here are three of the biggest.
Can Daniel Jones bounce back?
Jones signed a four-year, $160M deal in 2023 but played in just six games before tearing his ACL against the Raiders in Week 9. Altogether, New York’s would-be franchise QB threw two touchdowns and six interceptions with an abysmal 36.3 QBR last season.
Those numbers are a far cry from 2022 when Jones passed for 3,205 yards and 15 touchdowns with another 708 yards and seven scores on the ground. Statistically, he outperformed more established quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson, Dak Prescott and Matthew Stafford, which led to his lucrative new contract.
But New York won just two of Jones’ six starts last season, and his contract has no guaranteed money beyond 2024. The team can save $30M against the cap with his 2025 release, making 2024 a make-or-break season for the sixth-year quarterback.
Things won’t be easy now that running back Saquon Barkley is an Eagle but could get better with wide receiver Malik Nabers in the fold. The Giants’ No. 1 pick averaged 17.6 yards per catch for 1,569 yards and 14 scores for LSU last season and could help Jones get back on track.
Can Brian Daboll fix the offense?
Thanks in part to Jones’ solid performance in 2022, Daboll was named NFL Coach of the Year in his first season with the team. But after a 6-11 finish last year, Buffalo’s former offensive coordinator is considering taking over play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.
“It’s something I’m looking into,” Daboll said at the Annual League Meeting, via the team’s official website. “…I’ve been doing a bunch of research, but no decision has been made. I’m still going through that process, thinking about what we need to do.”
Daboll’s Bills averaged 24 points per game from 2018-2024. New York’s 15.6 points per game were third-fewest in the NFL last season and the lowest since Joe Judge’s team scored 15.2 points per game in 2021.
Can Devin Singletary carry the load?
Barkley had 1,242 total yards and 10 scores for the team last year. His 247 carries were 47 more than his career average and 69.4 more than Singletary’s average over the past five seasons.
Seen by many as more of a committee running back, Singletary set career-highs in carries (216) and yards (898) for the Texans last year but scored only four touchdowns. He’ll need to do better than that if the Giants hope to gain ground in the NFC East.
