The Magpies were unable to make any major signings midway through the season. That was because of the Premier League‘s profit and sustainability rules. Instead, the only arrival was youngster Alfie Harrison from Manchester City, who scored his first goal for the Under-18s last week.
But the club are hoping to splash the cash again in the summer, much like they have done during almost every window since the change of ownership.
Last year we saw big money spent on the likes of Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento, and it sounds like Newcastle United are already planning to invest just as heavily in the summer of 2024.
Three positions Newcastle want to strengthen in this summer
According to iNews, Newcastle are looking to strengthen in three separate positions this summer.
They state that the Magpies want to sign a versatile forward, a midfielder who can play as a ‘six’ and a centre-back that iNews describe as ‘adaptable’.
The forward will probably be the most interesting addition, as Newcastle will likely want someone who can play out wide and through the middle – just like Anthony Gordon.
That would help ease the pressure up front, with Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson struggling with injuries this season. However, it is unclear if Newcastle’s current plan is dependent on Wilson’s future. It has been claimed that he is likely to leave St James’ Park this summer.
Midfield will also be a difficult addition, as Howe enjoys having Bruno Guimaraes in the middle of midfield. But he wants to be more advanced, and showcased why during a man of the match display away to Nottingham Forest.
As for the defence, Newcastle need a long-term replacement for Fabian Schar. It was recently reported that Dan Ashworth was looking at Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi, and it will be interesting to see if the club continue to track him despite Ashworth’s departure for Manchester United.
