Barring an unexpected change, former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick seemingly won’t land a coaching gig elsewhere this winter after the Atlanta Falcons hired Raheem Morris on Thursday.
Belichick’s ongoing availability could put New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll on the hot seat long before the 2024 season begins after Big Blue ended this past campaign with a record of 6-11.
For a piece published Friday, NFL reporter Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com wrote that Giants co-owner John Mara, 69, “isn’t getting any younger” and “badly wants another Lombardi Trophy.”
“If Daboll is awful in 2024, he’s probably going to get fired regardless of whether Mara thinks he has a legit shot at Belichick,” Slater said.
One-time NFL Most Valuable Player and current CBS Sports analyst Boomer Esiason suggested earlier this week that Belichick could spend a season waiting to see if the Giants gig opens by January 2025.
Belichick served as an assistant and as defensive coordinator with the Giants from 1979 through the 1990 season, and the 71-year-old earned his first two of eight career Super Bowl rings with the organization.
As for Daboll, he seemingly ran former defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale out of town after they spent just two seasons together.
Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka could also leave the Giants without having a different job in hand, likely so he can also get away from Daboll’s supposed “madman” tendencies on days of games.
Slater did acknowledge that “the stars might never align for Belichick’s return to the Giants” because the job likely will only become available if New York looks like a non-contender by the start of next year.
While Slater wrote that Belichick’s “only goal for his next job would be winning another Super Bowl,” it’s worth noting not a single team that is allegedly a “good coach” away from playing in the next postseason tournament has yet hired the living legend.
