‘The voice of a golden era,’ Boston Bruins HONOR Jack Edwards

Iconic sports commentator Jack Edwards announces retirement from the NHL after 19 years of being B’s voice. The Boston Bruins star announcer will have his final call end with the 2023-24 regular season games. He’s been in the business for over 45 years with various stops at media, the most special career days being at NESN.

Following his retirement announcement, the Boston Bruins honored him with a gold stick as fans honored him with a standing ovation at TD Garden arena. In a press release, he stated that he’s no longer able to achieve his goals, and decided it’s time to put a step away from the mic.

He thanked the fans and Bruins for the “19-year-long joyride” and the love and support he received from everyone including his family. His era of sitting “high above the ice” has now come to an end as he states,

I recently decided that the time has come for me to finish my shift as the voice of the Boston Bruins. I am no longer able to attain the standards I set for myself, to honor the fans, the players, the Bruins organization and NESN with the best they all deserve. Jack Edwards as per Christian Arnold of NY Post.
Edward’s partner Brickley expressed how his retirement news “just kind of floored me.” They’ve been partners since 2005. Brickley mentions how “he drew the emotion out of me” despite him being the quiet one in the locker room. B’s fans will surely miss his voice in the upcoming season as Edwards has been with them for over a decade.

Jack Edwards reveals real reason behind his retirement
Jack Edwards reveals that he has been having problems with speech and it has been one of the reasons behind his retirement. He said that his speech problems started mysteriously and despite all medical tests, there were no negative reports.

He noted how he had undergone 40 minutes of speech therapy every day to cure his problem but found it “not fair for me to continue” when he’s not recovering to his 100% state.

I do not have cancer. I don’t have dementia. I haven’t had a stroke…The images of my brain literally reveal nothing. Jack Edwards as per Christian Arnold of NY Post.
Edwards also confirmed that he did not have any accident which may have triggered his symptoms. He noted how his wife “can’t stand it” seeing him suffering and “has to leave the room.” After his retirement, he plans to enjoy his time skiing on the Vermont Hills and spend more time with family and friends.
