The NY Jets have already played four quarterbacks this season — why not make it five? The Jets have reportedly signed quarterback Brett Rypien off the Seattle Seahawks practice squad, per CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson.
Anderson is reporting that the Jets have released veteran QB Tim Boyle in a corresponding move. Boyle started the last two games for the Jets but was benched following consecutive lackluster performances.
The Jets turned to veteran Trevor Siemian in the second half of this past Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, but after his struggles, all options are on the table moving forward.
That includes potentially going back to Zach Wilson at quarterback, although the former No. 2 overall pick was the center of some controversial reports on Monday. It also could include giving Rypien a shot.
Rypien was signed by the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft. He’s only started four games in the NFL, although two of his first three starts happened to come against the Jets.
In eight career NFL games, Rypien has thrown for four touchdowns and nine interceptions, completing 58 percent of his passes. He started one game for the Los Angeles Rams this season, completing just 13-of-28 of his attempts for 130 yards in a 20-3 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 9.
Much like Boyle, Rypien was added to the roster because he has experience in offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett’s system. Rypien spent time learning Hackett’s scheme as part of the Broncos last season.
That’s why it should come as very little surprise that he is the quarterback the Jets signed. As for Boyle, he hits the free-agent market after starting the last two games for the Jets. It turns out his relationship with Hackett and Aaron Rodgers couldn’t save his job in this instance.
The Jets still have not announced a starter going into their Week 14 matchup with the Houston Texans. It’s unlikely that Rypien gets the start right out of the gate, but don’t be surprised if he takes the field at some point this season.
