Stoke City target ‘expected to complete medical’ ahead of £1m transfer
Stoke City are set to find an early answer to their goalkeeping question in the shape of highly-rated Rotherham United man Viktor Johansson.
That’s according to The Telegraph’s John Percy who says the Sweden international is set to complete a medical today ahead of what they say will be a £1million-plus transfer.
It is reported the Potters have activated a release clause in the 25-year-old’s contract following the Millers’ relegation to League One.
Despite Rotherham’s poor season the ex-Aston Villa trainee has had another good campaign and has been arguably their best player for the last few years, he added another 46 appearances to the 144 he has made for United since joining them from Leicester City in September 2020.
Johansson started out in his homeland with Hammarby before spending four years in the Villa academy. He moved to the Leicester development set-up as a 19-year-old in 2019 but never made a first team appearance. He won his first senior cap against Moldova last October.
The move is an early and important one for Stoke who were not settled in goal last season. Mark Travers looked to be a good acquisition, albeit only on loan before he was called back by Bournemouth after just 14 games.
That thrust Jack Bonham into the role but he was unconvincing and compelled Stoke to bring in Daniel Iversen, another loan player, this time from Leicester City.
The previous couple of seasons were a confused picture as well with Bonham, Joe Bursik, Adam Davies and Matija Sarkic all splitting time.
