Just six years on, however, the striker hasn’t fulfilled his potential game rating, nor the promise he once showed in the real world.
The son of former West Brom and Leicester City striker Kevin Campbell is currently experiencing his worst season in front of goal since his breakthrough, which came in the latter stages of the 2017-17 season.
Campbell currently has two goals in all competitions for Stoke City, with only one coming in the league.
So, with his contract at the Bet365 Stadium set to expire this summer, most Stoke fans may feel that they won’t miss Campbell should he make the move north of the border to Scotland, where Rangers are rumoured to be interested in the left-footed attacker.
Tyrese Campbell has not lived upto his potential at Stoke City
The youngster arguably made his breakthrough at the perfect time, with his debut coming at the tail end of the season when the Potters suffered relegation from the Premier League in 2017-18.
This time was perfect as it allowed the youngster a chance to stake a claim to be the striker to score the goals that would fire Stoke back to the top flight.
In the following season however, Campbell began by making limited appearances but still scoring his first two goals for his boyhood side, before taking in a six-month loan spell at Shrewsbury Town in League One, scoring only five goals but guiding Salop to League One safety.
Then, in the summer of 2019, Nathan Jones finally put faith in the young striker, and Tyrese repaid him with nine goals across all competitions as Stoke failed to mount a challenge to be promoted back to the Premier League, even with the COVID-19 interruption.
Since this breakthrough though, Campbell hasn’t registered above 10 league goals in any of his seasons, and after spending some of the current campaign injured, he has perhaps left most fans of the Potters fairly disappointed, considering they once thought him to be the man to take them back up to the top flight.
Stoke City supporters left disappointed with Tyrese Campbell
In the middle of March, BBC Radio Stoke spoke to two Potters fans to gauge their thoughts on Campbell’s contract situation and the legacy – if any – he may be leaving at Stoke should he move on this summer, with both expressing that it may be best for all parties if there is a parting of ways at the end of June.
Speaking to reporter Rob Adcock, Angela Smith said, “Of all the people we’ve had who have looked a prolific finisher, he’s going to be, in my lifetime, the most disappointing.
“If there’s a 50/50 ball, and he doesn’t think he’s going to win that 50/50 ball, he’s going to gracefully let the other guy get it to save breaking his leg.
“I’m not going to put him on the same par as Keith Scott, but for having ability, to me it’s just not happened for him.
“My thoughts are he’s probably spoken to several clubs, and he’s pretty sure about where he may be going, but it would be good for him to go out on a high”.
