Stoke City player ratings vs West Brom 2-1

Stoke City player ratings vs West Brom as Lewis Koumas shines despite defeat

Three goals, two shots against the post, a goalline clearance, one pretty entertaining Championship fixture – well, the first half – and plenty of frustration for Stoke City.

Stoke were beaten 2-1 at the bet365 Stadium by West Bromwich Albion thanks to a close range finish from Karlan Grant and neat goal from former Potter Josh Maja either side of a well-taken strike from Lewis Koumas.

Stoke were kicking themselves for their defending in the first-half but could still have easily found an equaliser but twice Koumas struck the woodwork. West Brom might have got another too but Eric Bocat cleared a Tom Fellows shot from underneath his own bar.

Johansson: Will be kicking himself for letting Fellows’ cross float over his head for opening goal. 4.5

Tchamadeu: Switched to wing-back. Couldn’t stop crosses coming in from the right but galloped down the wing and was able to get passes into the box. 4.5

Gooch: Left wing-back this time. Big job against Fellows and couldn’t stop cross for opener. Looked more comfortable at right-back. 4.5

Bocat: Left centre-back in a three. Important clearance off the line in first-half. A flash of skill but largely stuck to defensive tasks. 6

Wilmot: Cut a frustrated figure at times. Always tried to get on the front foot in his defending and got into offensive positions particularly in second-half. 6

Gibson: Big block to stop John Swift albeit having lost his runner. Followed Josh Maja deeper at times but couldn’t stop second goal. 5.5

Thompson: Some useful pressing at times but was brushed aside too easily on the way to the Fellows chance. 5.5

Laurent: Looked to slip into space behind the Albion press when Stoke broke. Nice pass through when Koumas hit post. 6

Junho: Not everything came off after starting in a more central role. Still looks like he is getting up to full speed. 6

Manhoef: Superb assist for Koumas and will still struggle to believe he didn’t score after Koumas hit post. 6.5

Koumas: One well-taken goal and two shots against the post in a lively performance where he showcased pace and skill. 8

Substitutes

Moran (for Tchamadeu, 60): Extra energy in number 10 role and he set up chance for Koumas to strike post for second time. 6

Burger (for Thompson, 70): Dropped to bench after Watford performance but got final 20 minutes here to help Stoke’s hunt for equaliser. 5

Mmaee (for Junho, 70): Led the line and played with a bit of intensity to try to keep Stoke in the final third. 6
