Wouter Burger will be tested for concussion after taking a whack to the back of his head in Stoke City’s draw with Sheffield Wednesday.
Stoke used a concussion sub to replace Burger as a precaution early in the second half at Hillsborough but he will now be doctors ahead of next weekend’s home match against another Championship relegation rival, Plymouth Argyle.
Steven Schumacher said: “He’s fine, he’s all right. He got a bit dizzy. Daniel punched him in the back of the head. We used a concussion sub and he had to come off. We’ll have to see how he is. He doesn’t seem too bad.”
Stoke will be without Ryan Mmaee, Lynden Gooch and Ben Pearson, who have all suffered hamstring injuries, while Sead Haksabanovic will also be monitored. Haksabanaovic was withdrawn at half-time yesterday due to a groin injury.
Former Plymouth loanee Luke Cundle, who scored his first goal for Stoke this weekend, would be an option to replace Burger in midfield.
Stoke ended up coming from a goal behind to draw and stay three points ahead of Wednesday in the battle to stay in the Championship.
Schumacher said: “We knew in the week that it was going to be a tough start to the game. Sheffield Wednesday had a brilliant result mid-week against Norwich, coming from two behind and playing in a certain style that we expected them to go with today. We planned to come under the cosh. Obviously we didn’t want to be under as much pressure as we were but credit to them, they started the game really well. The crowd were behind them, they had loads of crosses into the box, loads of corners and we defended them really well.- The goalkeeper Daniel (Iversen) made a brilliant save and they hit the bar in that spell as well but we got through it and got stronger as the half went on.
“At half-time we spoke about trying to close the distances a little bit better and trying to put them under a bit more pressure, which I felt we did. Then having felt behind we showed brilliant character again. We changed the shape and got fresh legs into the game when there was more space. And we fully deserved to get something from the game.”
