Steve Cooper’s Leicester City transfer need could be solved after Jannik Vestergaard comment

Victor Kristiansen has received the backing of Jannik Vestergaard to return to Leicester City and make an impact in the Premier League.

The left-back will come back to the club this summer after a successful year on loan at Bologna, with a decision to be made over his next step. Kristiansen had initially left City because he did not like the plans Enzo Maresca had for him, slotting into the left of a back three when the team were in possession.

But with Steve Cooper coming in, and the new manager often operating a wing-back system during his time at Nottingham Forest, the door could be open for Kristiansen to feature. Vestergaard, who is playing alongside Kristiansen for Denmark at Euro 2024, believes he has characteristics that could make him a hit in England.

As City look to build a squad capable of achieving Premier League survival, but with a limited budget available, Kristiansen could be like a new signing for Cooper. Aged 21, Kristiansen is someone he could develop too.

“I think he is a really good player, and he has had a really good season in Bologna, which he has been really happy about,” Vestergaard told Danish media last week. “He comes in and doesn’t have too much respect, even if it sounds negative.

“I mean he just comes in and grabs his chance. He has the courage of his opinions and some ferocity about his game. I am very impressed by how he has entered the national team and has simply taken that place.

“He certainly has some qualities that suit us and English football. Most recently, we had a coach who built the game in a different way. Then he ended up in a position where he couldn’t quite see himself, and I could understand that. It also turned out to be a good decision to go to Bologna.”

Kristiansen started Denmark’s first two matches at the Euros, but after a mistake in the 1-1 draw with England, he was left out of the starting line-up for their final group match against Serbia. Vestergaard played his part in the Danes’ goalless draw on Tuesday night, with three stalemates and three points enough to book a last-16 tie against Germany.
