Should Knicks Trade for Memphis Grizzlies’ LaRavia?

Memphis Grizzlies guard Jake LaRavia could be on the trade block and the New York Knicks could make sense as a new destination.

The New York Knicks have looked to improve their three-point shooting. They’ve done thanks in part to the arrival of Donte DiVincenzo, ranking ninth as a team in both three-pointers and percentage entering Thursday play.

There’s always room for improvement, however, and it could behoove the Knicks to make a move on the open NBA market, especially with the ban on trading players signed over the offseason set to expire this week.

As February’s trade deadline approaches, the Memphis Grizzlies could be primed to make a move. Memphis (6-17) is set to get Ja Morant back on the roster next week after serving a 25-game suspension due to conduct detrimental to the league.

Matt Moore of Action Network laid out a couple of scenarios for the Grizzlies, who are poised to miss center Steven Adams for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

“The Grizzlies are maxed out in roster space but are interested in moving one or two players with Ja Morant nearly back from suspension in order to keep center Bismack Biyombo, whom they desperately need with Steven Adams out for the year,” Moore writes. “Jake LaRavia and John Konchar are believed to be available in talks.”

Out of the two names mentioned, LaRavia is the more attractive name for the Knicks. The 22-year-old was the 19th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft but has struggled to find playing time with the Grizzlies, who are smothered with young, enticing players. LaRavia has shuttled back and forth from the main roster and the G League. He’s only played in six games for the Grizzlies this season, averaging just over 12 minutes in those appearances.

LaRavia was a 37 percent three-point shooter during his collegiate career at Indiana State and Wake Forest, and his age and upside could work wonders for the Knicks, who might lose Immanuel Quickley to free agency after failing to come to terms on a long-term contract extension over the offseason.
