Sam Cosgrove happy to scored his first goal against Wycombe

A moment of madness from Wycombe’s goalkeeper Max Stryjek gave Sam Cosgrove his first goal in a Barnsley shirt as he earned his side all three point in the League One encounter.

The goal is something that the Pole will certainly want to forget, as he gifted Cosgrove the opportunity to slot the ball into an empty net after dramatically dropping the ball after going down under minimal contact from the striker.

Although not the prettiest of goals, that will not matter to the journeyman Cosgrove, who is now off the mark at Oakwell.

The 26-year-old has made just one start for Barnsley since arriving on a free transfer from Birmingham City in the summer but has been a regular off of the bench. That first goal for the club had eluded the striker, but he is now looking to utilise that fortune to kick on for the rest of the season.

With Barnsley just outside of the play-offs currently, getting Cosgrove in form could be the difference between the Yorkshire side sneaking in or just missing out on a chance of promotion. The excellent Devante Cole has been in great form this season but manager Neill Harris cannot become over-reliant on his talisman as any injury to Cole would leave a huge void in the team.

Cosgrove getting his name on the scoresheet, no matter how it went in, is a big boost for Barnsley as it not only saw them take home all three points, but has given the striker some much needed confidence.

Speaking on the goal, Cosgrove said:

“It was a strange one really. It’s not often that you come across goals like that in football. But we take it and move on, job done.

“From my point of view, Wycombe were trying to slow the game down all game and the boy (Stryjek) has gone down under minimal contact from the corner and he was trying to waste time again when he got the ball back.

“Maybe there was a little bit of contact, but there’s absolutely nowhere near enough for him to drop the ball like that.

The striker is looking to harness the opportunity and semend delighted to get off the mark for the Tykes.

“I have been desperate to get my first goal for Barnsley. I think I have contributed on the pitch in other ways, but as a striker, you want to score goals and there’s absolutely no way I was not putting the ball in the back of the net when it fell to me.”

“I have not quite managed to get going myself, but hopefully this is that little psychological boost that has got me off the mark and put me in good stead going forward.
