Part of Coventry school will be demolished due to ‘high levels’ of asbestos
Part of a Coventry school will be demolished due to high levels of asbestos. President Kennedy School applied for permission for its disused and derelict swimming pool building to be bulldozed.
The building, which was spared when the old school was demolished four years ago, was closed in 2016 and has been found to have high levels of asbestos. It has also suffered damage from weather, rats and “other wildlife” according to the Futures Trust, which runs the school.
Coventry City Council gave permission for the building to be demolished at the end of last year but attached to this were a number of conditions that have to be met before it can be pulled down. One of these conditions is in regards to the ecology and landscaping scheme of the site.
In a new application to the city council, the school has provided details on its proposed landscaping of the site. It also includes a nesting bird activity report.
Both of these will need to be approved before the demolition can go ahead. The proposals are currently under consideration at the council.
They can be viewed on the council’s website, under the planning applications section, searching for reference PL/2024/0000820/DCA.
