Points Leicester City need to guarantee promotion and Championship title

The latest Leicester City news as the gap to second and third place increased following the midweek Championship games.

Leicester City took a step closer to their end goal this season this week and will look to do so again when they take on Middlesbrough this weekend.

A comfortable 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night, coupled with Southampton’s loss against Bristol City saw City’ s lead at the top of the table increase, as did the gap to third place. Enzo Maresca’s men are now 12 points clear of Leeds United in second and 14 clear of the Saints in third.

The first priority for City will be sealing their return to the Premier League as soon as possible. We are now getting to the point of the season where the calculators come out to work out exactly the points needed from the games remaining for that to happen.

First, let’s look at a guaranteed top-two finish. To 100 percent confirm that will happen, City need another 31 points, however, given their superior goal difference, then 30 should be enough.

So, simply, that’s 10 wins from their remaining 14 games. That would take them to 108 points, the most that both United in second and fourth-placed Ipswich, who have a game in hand, can get with their remaining games.

Such is the closeness of the race for second place, at this moment in time, City will need just one more point than that to guarantee the Championship title. 32 points would again make sure mathematically, but realistically, 31 points should be enough to secure the top spot and allow City to reach the maximum possible Saints total of 109.

Those two totals would of course see City break the Championship points total set by Reading. The Royals accumulated 106 points back in 2006. In order to beat that total, City need 29 more points, meaning that they can afford to lose four and draw one of their remaining 14 games between now and the end of the season.

With any Championship season, a lot can still happen with lots and twists and turns ahead. One thing is for sure, the calculators will be used a lot more over the next few weeks and months.
