The New York Giants opted to designate running back Saquon Barkley as their franchise player at this time last year. It was a decision that did not sit well with the superstar but one he eventually embraced.
After a brief holdout, Barkley signed a modified version of the franchise tag but failed to activate any of his incentives throughout the regular season.
Entering this offseason, Barkley asked that if the Giants were to tag him again, they do it early and not wait until the March 5 deadline.
That’s not going to be a problem for Barkley this time around.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Giants, as expected, are unlikely to place the franchise tag on Barkley but will discuss a long-term deal.
Barkley’s representatives and Giants general manager Joe Schoen are expected to meet at the 2024 NFL Combine this week. However, recent reports suggest Big Blue won’t increase the offer previously made to Barkley, which was declined.
Ultimately, unless Barkley takes some sort of hometown discount, he seems destined to hit the free agent market for the first time in his career.
