Phil Hay says he’d be shocked if Leeds didn’t try to sign £15m player now
Leeds United are set for another season in the Championship.
The Whites were beaten at Wembley on Sunday by Southampton, and they’ve been condemned to another year in the second-tier.
Of course, the Whites have plenty of work to do in the transfer window after struggling to get out of the Championship.
A number of players will have to be sold in order to balance the books, while more quality will have to be brought in.
Of course, Leeds will also be keen to retain some of their current squad, including some of their loan players.
Joe Rodon has been one of Leeds’ star men this year, and speaking on The Square Ball Podcast, Phil Hay has been discussing the Welshman’s future.
Hay believes that Leeds will try to do a deal for Rodon this summer, claiming that he’d be really surprised if the Whites didn’t have another go at signing him.
Phil Hay expects Leeds to try for Joe Rodon
Hay spoke about the £15m defender and Leeds’ plans this summer.
“I’d be really surprised if they didn’t have another go at Rodon, I really would. It will come down to what his alternatives are,” Hay said.
“If you looked at him this season as a team who has just been promoted or you’re bottom-end of the Premier League, the money you’d have to pay for him, by Premier League standards, isn’t massive, he might be worth a punt.
“Tottenham tend to bargain pretty hard, but he’s been so good this season and so steady you’d absolutely say if you can get him back that fills the right centre-back, get it done.”
Rodon deal could be doable
Joe Rodon may have Premier League suitors this summer, but a move to Leeds could just be doable.
Rodon did enjoy his season at Elland Road, and Leeds are well-poised to get back to the Premier League at their second-attempt.
Factor in that Rodon has a number of friends within the squad, including a number of Welsh compatriots, and the stars may be aligned for Leeds to be able to get a deal done.
As Hay says, negotiating with Tottenham may be difficult, as may the financial aspects of this deal, but, in terms of convincing Rodon to make the move, Leeds could have a real shot at this one.
