Tottenham are one of the most unique teams we’ve ever seen.
Under Ange Postecoglou’s management, Spurs have transformed into one of the most exciting attacking teams on the planet, and they play in a way we’ve never really seen before.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Michael Owen has been discussing Spurs’ tactical set-up, and he says Tottenham’s use of their full-backs really intrigues him – particularly the positioning of Destiny Udogie.
Indeed, Owen says that he’s never seen a full-back play in the way Udogie does, claiming that is very unique.
Destiny Udogie is very unique
Owen spoke about the £15m man.
“The full-backs, Udogie is breaking forward. I’ve never seen full-backs like this in my life. The full-backs are in centre-forward positions really,” Owen said.
“It’s very unusual and you have someone at the top of the screen making a run there. You don’t know where they’re coming from.”
Unlike anyone else
We can absolutely see where Owen is coming from here.
Udogie is unlike any other player we’ve seen.
We’ve seen full-backs act as wingers and we’ve seen full-backs invert before, but Udogie almost inverts as a number 10, and that is a very bizarre way to play.
Of course, as we’ve seen this season, playing Udogie in this role works an absolute treat, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a compeletly unique position that we’ve never seen before.
Ange Postecoglou promised he’d bring some fresh ideas to Tottenham, and it’s fair to say that his use of full-backs at Spurs is a truly unique style that makes Tottenham one of the most exciting and interesting teams in the Premier League.
Udogie is certainly a fantastic player, and he may be the only player in the Premier League who is currently capable of playing such a role in this way.
