Nikola Jokic had one of the best years of his basketball career while leading the Denver Nuggets to their first NBA Championship in franchise history.
Jokic was undoubtedly the best player on the roster, and without the two-time NBA MVP, the Nuggets wouldn’t have been a favorite to make the NBA Finals, let alone win the title.
Keeping that in mind, one would assume that Jokic was without a doubt the favorite to win notable awards around the globe, especially in his home country, Serbia.
However, according to a recent tweet by NBACentral, Bogdan Bogdanovic edged out Jokic in the race to be named the best player in Serbia.
Now, Bogdanovic is a talented player, but he is nowhere even close to Jokic’s level.
Last season, Jokic averaged 24.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 9.8 assists per game for the Nuggets over 69 appearances during the regular season.
On the other hand, Bogdanovic put up 14.0 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game for the Atlanta Hawks while primarily coming off the bench throughout the season.
As mentioned in the tweet, Jokic came in second place with 10 votes to his name, while Bogdanovic was hands down the favorite to win the award with 27 votes to his name.
Although Jokic most likely won’t cause drama over the snub, it’s still wild to wonder how he finished second for an award to be the best player in his country.
Either way, Jokic is currently focused on helping the Nuggets stay competitive in the Western Conference and win back-to-back NBA Championships this season.
