Man City make decision on Ederson new contract extension

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has played a vital role in the side’s success since his arrival back in 2017 and Pep Guardiola does not want to lose the Brazilian ace in the near future.

The Brazilian keeper, 30, will still have two years left to run on his current deal at the end of this season. But despite that meaning there is no immediate panic or rush, the Treble holders believe it makes perfect sense to secure Ederson’s services for even longer – as soon as possible.

That underlines the unwavering faith boss Pep Guardiola has in the former Benfica stopper, who has been an integral figure at the back throughout City’s on-going, all-conquering era.

Since his £35million arrival in July 2017 – a then-world record fee for a keeper – Ederson has won five Premier Leagues, two FA Cups, four League Cups as well as the Champions League, European Super Cup and World Club Cup.

That roll of honour means he is regarded as one of the best number ones in world football – and explains why City are so keen to tie him down now for the remainder of his peak years between the posts.

Currently on £120,000-a-week, the South American, injured in the draw with Liverpool last weekend, is likely to see that jump to £200k in an improved extension.

And the English champions are also hoping to persuade Ederson’s deputy Stefan Ortega to extend his stay. The German keeper, 31, signed on a free from Arminia in the summer of 2022, will have only a year left on his existing Etihad deal come July.

Ortega, on £55k a week, is thought to be looking to be a number one in his own right elsewhere this summer. But City are optimistic that situation could change as he gets a rare run of first-team action in Ederson’s absence.
