Leeds United move for £11m Manchester City player

Leeds United’s squad is as good as it has been for quite some time in terms of cover, and strength in depth. Even compared to the three years in the Premier League, Leeds have more depth overall.

Long gone are the days when Marcelo Bielsa was forced to field youngsters on the bench, playing men out of position. Luke Ayling, Joe Gelhardt and Charlie Cresswell struggle to make the bench, these days.

But, there are still a couple of holes that need plugging. Leeds tried to sign a no.10 in the summer but to no avail, failing in bids for the likes of Kenny McLean, Matt O’Riley and of course, Bayer’s Nadiem Amiri.

The other issue, and only other issue, is left-back. Junior Firpo and Sam Byram have injuries, and then Jamie Shackleton and Stuart Dallas also find themselves on the sidelines. Firpo may end up leaving.

Dallas, Byram and Shackleton will all see their contracts expire at the end of the season. On-loan Djed Spence is currently playing on the left of the defence. So, Leeds need a left-back signing in January.

Manchester City’s £11m left-back Sergio Gomez is perfect. A bit like Kalvin Phillips, he joined in the summer of 2022 having starred for Vincent Kompany’s Anderlecht – but has managed just 31 games.

In Belgium, the “excellent” left-footer scored seven goals and created 15 more in just 50 Anderlecht games. Attacking, creative, technically gifted and enough for Man City to spend an eight-figure fee on.

Turkish site A Haber – as per City Xtra – say Leeds’ rivals Galatasaray want to sign Gomez on loan in January. He could be the missing piece in the jigsaw, if we elbow Galatasaray aside for his signature.
