Former Birmingham City and Middlesbrough man leaves manager’s role
It was announced on Wednesday (October 2) that Shotton following two-years as a manager at non-league Hanley Town would be departing. His departure from the Potteries Park brings to an end a three-year association after joining them as a player in 2021.
At the time of his departure, Hanley Town are third from bottom, and occupy one of the relegation spots. They are two points adrift of safety after picking up six points from a possible 27.
In a parting statement to Shotton, and his assistant Ben Chapman, chairman Ron McIlreavy said: “I cannot thank Ryan and Ben enough for their efforts over the past 2 and a half years, keeping us in the league during their first attempt at management and breaking records for where the club finished in the league and also FA Trophy success.
During his time in charge of Hanley Town, who play in the Northern Premier League West Division, the eigth tier of English football, Shotton guided them to 16th and 13th-placed finishes. His departure comes just a few days out from their FA Trophy third qualifying round tie against Basford United.
Hanley Town was Shotton’s first job in football management, and he worked as a player-manager. They re based in Stoke-on-Trent, which is where Shotton is from, and began his career.
He was a player at the Bet365 Stadium from 2007 to 2015, and made 70 appearances for the Potters. Shotton left Staffordshire in 2014 for Derby County, but after just a season-and-a-half, he was loaned to Blues, and then sold for a reported £300,000.
During his time at St Andrew’s, he made 56 appearances. Shotton departed in 2017 for Middlesbrough, and racked up 87 appearances for the Boro, who acted as his last professional club in England. He dropped down to the non-league with Leek Town before a short stint in Australia with Melbourne Victory, but returned to England in 2021, where he was with Hanley Town ever since.
