Karren Brady makes David Moyes sack stance clear with Liverpool comparison

West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady has warned Liverpool to be extra careful who they appoint as the successor to Jurgen Klopp.

Brady’s comments in her column for The Sun‘s print edition [17 February, page 65] share an insight into West Ham’s thinking with David Moyes.

The Scotsman’s future is uncertain as he is out of contract at London Stadium in the summer and results have been poor for West Ham of late.

Klopp’s situation is different in that he has made his own choice to step down, but the search for a manager to replace the German will be tough.

“All signs point to Xabi Alonso moving into Jurgen Klopp’s spot at Anfield and, further, that he will be an ideal fit to fill them with a sock full of similar achievements to the German.

“At West Ham, we believed we had pulled off a coup with the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini, whose record included a period with Real Madrid and winning the Prem with Manchester City.

“It failed to work, the partnership lasted 18 months. Sometimes it’s the fit, the understanding and the trust between the manager, the players, the supporters and the board that guarantee success or failure.”

Reading between the lines, Brady would rather have someone in place she can trust and someone she knows exactly what she is getting from.

In Moyes, there is a mutual respect between the manager and the board. Bringing in a higher-profile figure with success elsewhere, though, will not guarantee success at West Ham in the view of Brady.

She’s not wrong, of course, and the Pellegrini example is particularly pertinent. However, being burned previously should not put the club off looking at managers who have had success elsewhere, rather than a steady Eddie.

Whether or not Moyes stays on is tough to predict. Should he indeed depart, though, the club need to be ambitious with their appointment process and bring in someone who can take West Ham to the next level.
