Kansas City Chiefs Beat Out This AFC Team In Trade For Xavier Worthy

In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs made a massive move. The Buffalo Bills were slotted at pick No. 28 to potentially select their Stefon Diggs replacement or address one of the other needs that came up after their slew of off-season cuts.

Instead of drafting someone with that pick, the Bills decided to trade with their AFC rivals, allowing them to draft one of the most electric receivers in the draft— disregarding the top three guys.

The order in which these top three receivers differed from analyst to analyst, but besides Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, and Rome Odunze, there’s a case to be made for Xavier Worthy being one of the higher-ceiling guys.

Xavier Worthy Is More Than A John Ross Clone
Not only did Worthy run an NFL-record-setting 4.21-second 40-yard dash, but his abilities on the field are as impressive. Xavier Worthy is not a one-trick pony with the sole ability to run in a straight line faster than anyone in NFL history.

Very rarely does a player get the opportunity to run a 40-yard dash within a game, so that part of his game shouldn’t be the singular reason a team takes him as highly as the Chiefs did. His speed is alluring, but his abilities as a wide receiver shouldn’t be diminished because of his 40-yard dash time.

Combined with the rocket arm attached to Josh Allen and the clear need for receiver talent after letting Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis go this off-season, adding a speedster like Xavier Worthy would’ve made sense for a team like the Buffalo Bills.

However, instead of just drafting him, the Bills traded with the Kansas City Chiefs, giving Patrick Mahomes a shiny, new toy in Xavier Worthy. The Chiefs were another team needing wide receiver depth, as they led the NFL in dropped passes throughout the 2024 NFL season.

The Chiefs weren’t the only team in the Xavier Worthy sweepstakes, as there was another AFC team in talks with the Buffalo Bills to acquire pick No. 28 to pair their rookie quarterback with the young speedster.

Buffalo Bills Trade Pick For Xavier Worthy To Chiefs Instead Of Patriots
According to a report from Michael Lombardi, a former NFL executive, the Kansas City Chiefs beat out the New England Patriots in the bidding war for the 28th overall pick. It was rumored that New England also wanted to select Worthy with that pick, but the Bills decided to trade him to Kansas City instead of New England.

It was a shocking move at the time, and after this information dropped, it made the decision even more shocking for Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills.

Now, maybe the Bills didn’t know who Kansas City planned on drafting. Maybe the Chiefs threw smoke screens Buffalo’s way during the negotiation. According to Beane, who was asked about the trade after it happened, he didn’t look back with regret.

“It’s not like we traded the player to Kansas City. I get that narrative. Like, if we had traded Stefon Diggs to Kansas City, well why would you trade him there? You don’t truly know who someone is going to select when you trade with them. They’re not going to call and say, ‘Hey, we’re trading up and we’re gonna take this player.’ And if you don’t trade with them and you pick a different player, they can still trade up with someone else. So, I’ve never understood that narrative.”

The major hang-up for most fans is, why would they have traded with a team they have a rich history with in the post-season that usually doesn’t end with the Buffalo Bills on top? In reality, the Bills have yet to beat Kansas City since the Chiefs drafted Mahomes.

Sure, the Bills have to play New England twice per season, but if the Pats look anything like it did last year, Buffalo should be licking their chops to play the team who picked third in the 2024 NFL Draft twice per season, even with a playmaker like Xavier Worthy.

Who knows, maybe after Worthy’s rookie season with Mahomes and the Chiefs, the Bills can look back on this and say, “Told ya!”

But, to know the Bills decided to trade with the Chiefs over the Patriots, it’s caused a slew of confusion over NFL fans across the nation.
