The Spaniard, who is still a huge fan favourite at Old Trafford, has teamed up with his former club to help build-up to their pre-season friendly fixture against La Liga side Real Betis in San Diego.

Mata, who left United two years ago, is considering his future in football after spending time with both Galatasaray in Turkey and Vissel Kobe in Japan. It remains to be seen what he will do next, but for now he is happy to help his former club promote their upcoming match in the United States of America.

Speaking of the friendly he told media: “We are visiting some soccer schools, hospitals, we are trying to do as much as we can in these three or four days that we will be here. Because it’s very important for a football player to actually get to know where we are and connect with the soccer fans, and for Manchester United too, so it is a great opportunity for both the club and myself. I’m really excited about being in San Diego, which is a lovely place. I’m also looking forward to the game.

“It’s going to be a nice game against a Spanish side that I know very well. It is going to be a competitive game, although it is pre-season and there’s no points, but I’m sure that both teams will bring the best teams they can and hopefully there’s great entertainment for the fans. It’s always been great to play in front of the US fans for United.”

Speaking away from the football, the 35-year-old was also asked for his verdict on Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment in his former club and what it could mean for United going forward.
