Eccles played 66 minutes as City secured a 3-1 win at the Lamex Stadium thanks to goals from Justin Obikwu, Bobby Thomas and Fabio Tavares.
And the 24-year-old is targeting a top-six finish this season and believes Coventry are more than capable of pushing for automatic promotion.
Eccles said: “It’s a nice moment to be the captain. I’m glad the gaffer chose me and put his faith in me to lead the boys out, even though it’s a friendly, it still means a lot to me, obviously, coming through from the academy.
“It’s nice to get some more minutes in the legs. I think we’ve extended it now from, 45 minutes to 70, so it’s close to getting to match fitness with obviously like three or four weeks left to the first game.
“It’s all about getting an understanding and trying to work on this new philosophy that we’re trying to set out.
