Joe Mazzulla had a lot to say about the rumors of issues between Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. In a press conference rant, Mazzulla went off on the reporters and journalists for seemingly fabricating stories of issues between the two.
He added that the two players love each other and are great teammates but go about things differently.
“It’s a really good question… The whole thing about that really pisses me off and I think it’s unfair to both of them. I think it’s stupid that people have to use those two guys’ names… so they can remain relevant. It’s very unfair those two get compared. They’re two completely different people, completely different players, completely different teammates, they love each other, and they go about winning and they go about their process in a different way.”
“So why do they have to always be lumped together? I think it’s unfair and people just use it for their own relativity. At the end of the day, those two guys, their relationship is their relationship, they love each other, they push each other every day in practice, they communicate with each other but they go about winning differently…”
Mazzulla then pointed out how other pairings in the NBA are not put through the same kind of media scrutiny, and it is unfair for Tatum and Brown to have to do so. He suggested that they not let these rumors get between them, and praised both as players and teammates, before reiterating that they do not deserve this.
“You see other duos around the league don’t have to go through that. It’s because of the platform that they have, it’s because they’ve been so successful their entire careers, they’ve been able to longstanding success at a high, high level. So people need them in order to stay relevant.”
“And they should not talk on speculation and they should get to know them as people before they talk about that stuff. They’re two of the greatest teammates and players that you could have and it’s been an honor to coach both of them. Doesn’t mean they have to be the same. It’s bullsh*t. I love both of them and they deserve better.”
It is good to see Mazzulla have the backs of his players as a head coach. We have seen instances in the past where coaches don’t support their players in front of the media, so this is a good sign for the Celtics’ harmony as they head into the NBA Finals.
Tatum And Brown Could Become An All-Time Duo With Championship
Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have been one of the best duos in the NBA for almost five years now. They’ve reached the Eastern Conference Finals four times in the last five years, and the NBA Finals twice. But for all their success, they have no championships as a duo to show for it. The duo will want to change that this year.
Tatum has been decent in the playoffs so far, averaging 26.0 points, 10.4, rebounds, and 5.9 assists. However, he hasn’t been at his best, unlike Brown, who has been sensational. Brown has averaged 25.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.6 assists, and made many big clutch shots and plays for the Celtics during this playoff run.
The 2024 NBA Finals will come down to which duo plays better; Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum or Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Shaquille O’Neal actually picked the Mavericks to beat the Celtics because of the strength of Doncic and Irving as a duo. Tatum and Brown will relish the opportunity to prove the doubters wrong and beat the Mavericks to win the NBA championship.
