The Foxes centre-back has been a key figure at the heart of City’s defence this season. Vestergaard has started 30 of the club’s Championship fixtures this season, scoring two goals.
With Vestergaard at centre-back, Leicester have moved to 12 points clear at the top of the Championship table ahead of second-placed Leeds United. The 31-year-old’s current deal at the King Power Stadium is set to expire at the end of the season, meaning he has entered the final six months of his contract and could leave as a free agent in the summer.
According to the Daily Mail, Leicester are looking to hand Vestagaard a contract extension in the near future. It has been claimed that City and Vestergaard are “poised” to open talks over a new deal, but it does not state the likelihood of an agreement being reached.
Vestergaard joined City in 2021 from Southampton in a £14 million deal after being signed by former manager Brendan Rodgers. However, he would make just 20 appearances for the club in his first season, with only ten of those coming in the Premier League.
Last season saw Vestergaard not feature at all in the Premier League for Leicester under Rodgers, who left the club last April shortly before the club’s relegation to the Championship was confirmed. Vestergaard signed a three-year deal with City, and there was doubt as to whether or not the defender had a long-term future at Leicester.
