Jamie Shackleton contract update emerges at Leeds United as transfers lined up
The 24-year-old’s career could stall if he stays put having made just 15 appearances in all competitions last season, and as a player adept in multiple positions, he needs to find a club where he’ll get regular minutes.
36 Championship appearances on loan at Millwall in 2022-23 were by far the most Shackleton has racked up in a single campaign, and that must surely have played on his mind as a serial bench-warmer for Daniel Farke’s side last season.
Furthermore, while letting Shackleton go wouldn’t see the Whites bring in any financial recompense, it would free up both wages and a position in the squad for a full-back or central midfielder – two positions the club are already likely to need this summer [The Athletic, 13 June].
Shackleton is in line to leave the club, but along with captain Liam Cooper, was stated to still be in discussions over a potential extension when their retained list was released [LeedsLive, 7 June].
At present, Shackleton is still free to speak with other clubs over a potential transfer elsewhere, and unless he accepts the deal offered to him, he will be a free agent able to move.
Shackleton’s time at Elland Road looks to be up despite him remaining in discussions over a new deal, and it could be the best move for everyone if he is to move on.
Sheffield United’s financial problems have already seen them hit with a two-point deduction for the start of the new season, thus bringing in Shackleton for free would be a strong start to their summer business
