Interesting: Wrexham considered signing Paul Mullin’s former strike partner last summer

Wrexham have clinched promotion from League Two whilst having attacking options which may leave some League One managers a little envious.

Saturday’s 6-0 thrashing of Forest Green Rovers – coupled with Mansfield Town’s win over Milton Keynes Dons – saw Wrexham secure a second straight promotion.

Paul Mullin unsurprisingly had a huge say, bagging two more goals to take his tally to 23 goals in 36 league games this season.

Jack Marriott came off the bench to finally score his first Wrexham since joining in January, having gone 14 appearances without a goal.

Add in Ollie Palmer, Steven Fletcher as well as Sam Dalby and Phil Parkinson has been given great attacking options to work with at the STōK Cae Ras.

It’s unclear whether Parkinson and Wrexham plan to make any changes to the attacking ranks this summer but one player Wrexham looked into signing last summer has now emerged…

Wrexham wanted Paul Mullin’s old partner in crime
After promotion from the National League, Wrexham wanted to add more firepower and snapped up Fletcher before then landing Marriott in January.

Fans will remember that a late move to sign Luke Armstrong from Harrogate Town before the summer transfer deadline fell through.

Wrexham did consider other names earlier in the window though and The Athletic claim that Wrexham looked into signing Joe Ironside.

Ironside was Mullin’s partner in crime at Cambridge United, forming a strong partnership in their attack in the 2020-21 season.

Mullin racked up 34 goals whilst Ironside chipped in with 14 goals of his own.

Ironside noted in 2021 that he and Mullin just complemented each other well and Wrexham looked into reuniting the pair in Parkinson’s attack.

Ironside instead joined Doncaster Rovers, moving back to Yorkshire after spells with Sheffield United, Halifax Town, Harrogate Town and York City.

The move also allows Ironside to be a little closer to his hometown of Middlesbrough, so we can somewhat understand his move – even if seeing him and Mullin together again could have been exciting.

Joe Ironside stats this season
Ironside has enjoyed a superb season with Doncaster, whose exceptional form has then pushing for a spot in the League Two play-offs.

The 30-year-old scored in Saturday’s 4-0 thrashing of Accrington Stanley, taking his tally for the season to 20 goals in 50 games across all competitions.

Ironside has added four assists too, making a big impact in his first season at Doncaster.

Wrexham may still have an interest in Ironside but having missed out on a Mullin reunion last summer, we would imagine that the ship has sailed on this one.
