Lee Gregory admits he has been gutted how his renaissance period at Sheffield Wednesday has petered out as he begins the search for a new club.
Gregory, now aged 35, had found a goal touch after leaving Stoke City to join Wednesday in League One. He scored 17 times in 2021/22 before an 11-goal haul the following term helped secure promotion via a dramatic play-off campaign. He found the net on the opening day in the Championship back in August – a 2-1 home defeat to Southampton – but has since largely watched things from the sidelines.
He told supporters on social media: “I just wanted to say personally from the bottom of my heart – thank you to everyone at SWFC. This past year has not been what I wanted, and how I wanted my career here to finish. I have been gutted about it and wish it was different. As everyone who knows me knows, all I wanted to do was play. I am so happy the teamed stayed up because you all deserve it.
“I have had some of the best memories a footballer can get at this club with the promotion last year, and that will stay with me forever. The game at home against Peterborough was the best atmosphere I have ever seen and been involved in. I will be seeing you soon at Hillsborough as my son who’s now a massive fan wants to watch all the games. Thank you.”
The Sheffield Star claims there is interest from three EFL clubs to sign Gregory as a free agent. He scored seven goals in 50 appearances for Stoke after being signed as a free agent by Nathan Jones in 2019.
