Guidi says Celtic are hoping to sign a replacement for Taylor

With Brendan Rodgers looking to add more quality to the Celtic squad this January, it will come as no surprise to the supporters that the left-back position is one that is on the list to improve.

But, strangely, it seems that it’s not Greg Taylor’s replacement the club are looking for. Alexandro Bernabei joined Celtic in June 2022.

Since the move, the Argentian has made just 22 appearances for Celtic as he struggles to display Taylor from his starting berth.

Under Brendan Rodgers, the 23-year-old has made just three appearances in the green and white hoops amassing just 43 minutes of first-team football. [Transfermarkt]

As the youngster continues to struggle on and off the park, it’s difficult to see how he’s going to make his mark at Celtic.

And according to Mark Guidi, Celtic are looking for a replacement for the £3.75m signing from Lanus.

Guidi said [The Go Radio Football Show], “They’re looking at left-backs as well. That’s an area that’s certainly under the microscope.

“That’s nothing against Greg Taylor who has been brilliant at £2m [it was £3m] and has been great value.

“Whoever they get in, if they get anybody in next month, won’t be easy to overtake him. But what Brendan Rodgers has realised, Bernabei can’t put the pressure on Greg Taylor.

“Greg Taylor needs to be pushed and Bernabei is not the guy to do that.”

Brendan Rodgers’ verdict on Alexandro Bernabei at Celtic

The Argentine has already fallen foul of the Celtic manager’s discipline streak this season. Dropped from the matchday squad against Ross County after sleeping in for a team meeting, Bernabei has still to be properly seen in a Celtic jersey.

At the time, whilst not amused by his player’s actions, Rodgers said of Bernabei [The Sun], “He has been brilliant in pre-season in terms of mentality and attitude and I felt for him.

“The very morning of the first game of the season, whatever happened, the alarm did not go off. I don’t have time to wait.

“We draw a line under it. He’s a good guy. You’ve got to learn and you’ve got to be ready.

“His professionalism is fantastic and there is no worry.

“When you come into a club the standard of your performance on and off the pitch is vital.

“We all make mistakes but you learn from them and you’ll be better for it.”

A slap on the wrist followed by positive praise by Rodgers. But even so, the Argentinian is still on the sidelines as he waits for a chance to impress that may never come.

Alexandro Bernabei’s Celtic future looks bleak

TBR Celtic have held the belief that Bernabei could be one of the few players that Rodgers will let go in January and after this update from Guidi, his future at the club looks uncertain.

Bernabei’s last start for Celtic was under Ange Postecoglou in May of this year in the 4-2 defeat by Hibs. Before that, he was found wanting against Rangers in the 3-0 loss at Ibrox and has not started for the club since.

It does look and sound as if Bernabei faces a fight to save his Celtic career. Is it one that he can win? It certainly doesn’t seem so.
