Guardiola makes Aston Villa declaration after Everton win

Manchester City’s defeat against Aston Villa is still fresh in Pep Guardiola’s mind after their win over Everton on Wednesday night.

City returned to action after their match with Brentford was postponed due to their involvement in the Club World Cup. Despite trailing 1-0 at the break at Goodison Park, Guardiola’s side went on to win 3-1.

But the reigning champions have had a mixed campaign so far, having lost three games including the 1-0 reverse at Villa Park earlier this month. Points were also dropped against Liverpool, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Wolves.

City are now just two points from Villa following the draw and defeat to Sheffield United and Manchester United respectively. They also have a game in hand and could move above Unai Emery’s side by a point.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola highlighted his team deserved to lose after their display at B6. “The games against Liverpool, Tottenham, Palace was better than ‘today [vs Everton] and we didn’t win,” he said.

“So in 16 games I remember we lost one, more than well deserved against Aston Villa. They were miles better than us. The rest of the games, we were better.”
