It is simple to become complacent after winning a Super Bowl, especially three in a row, and think that you will be alright even if you lose and don’t keep winning.
That occurs frequently. It’s challenging to maintain the same aggressive, competitive mindset after completing what everyone wants to accomplish twice in a row. The Kansas City Chiefs are determined to prevent it from occurring.
When all players are getting accustomed to one another during OTAs, complacency may set in. However, the top player for the Chiefs—who is perhaps the best in the league—doesn’t allow his teammates take their success for granted. No matter the season, he challenges them every time.
He did that on Wednesday.
“As the years go on, you start playing against the same guys over and over again,” Patrick Mahomes told the media. “It’s that competitive trash talk. Going up against guys like Drue (Tranquill) and Nick (Bolton) and some of the DBs – you talk trash in the locker room, but you love on each other too.
“We’re always competing, and at the end, we’re talking about it, trying to find ways to make each other better. I have to give away some of my secrets that I know about them, and they do a little bit of the same.”
Patrick Mahomes is renowned for his fierce competitiveness. His former teammate, Charvarius Ward, even compares him to Michael Jordan. Mahomes despises losing, perhaps more than he relishes winning. This is why he engages in friendly banter with his teammates. He believes that any method that drives the team towards their goals is worth trying, and this is a strategy that both Mahomes and the Chiefs are committed to.
