GOOD NEWS: Zay Flowers shares secret to Lamar Jackson’s dominant 2023 season

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson put together a regular season to remember this year.

Jackson was on top of his game in the regular season, tallying 4,499 total yards and 29 total touchdowns. He also helped the Ravens clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC for the first time since the 2019 season.

Jackson regularly looked quite comfortable in the pocket, and it also seemed as if he was provided with more freedom when anchoring the Ravens offense. During a recent appearance on “The Pivot Podcast,” Zay Flowers shared that the Ravens did indeed give the sixth-year passer both more freedom and responsibilities on the field.

“He’s super involved,” Flowers said. “They give him a lot of leeway to change up the call, to change the runs the opposite direction, to giving the receiver his own route, or checking into a different route. I believe that gave him more freedom in his head where like, alright, he got more options, he got more people he can check stuff to that he know going to win.

“So it’s really about who he want to throw the ball to because I feel like everybody on our team winning on they routes. We can hand it off to Gus, or we can hand it off to ‘Kean,’ or we can hand it off to Justice, or ‘L’ [Lamar Jackson] can run it. So it’s just like, they gave him the leeway and he running with it, like he doing exactly what he’s supposed to do.”

This call from the Ravens sure paid off. Overall, the Ravens ended up emerging as one of the more efficient offensive units in the NFL. Baltimore wound up ranking in the top 10 in both third down conversion percentage and red zone touchdown percentage in regular season play.

Jackson and the Ravens will square off with either the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round.
