Everton defender could unlock ‘another level’ after penning new deal
Karen Holmgaard’s sister, Sara, signed a new Everton contract earlier this week and the Denmark midfielder has now followed suit
Denmark international Karen Holmgaard has signed a new Everton contract that will keep her at the club alongside her twin sister, Sara. The duo arrived on Merseyside in August 2022, with Karen having excelled in both midfield and defence for Brian Sorensen’s side.
Everton confirmed on Wednesday that full-back Sara had penned a new deal and Karen has now followed suit. Despite suffering two setbacks with injury, the Danish talent played a crucial role for the Blues last term, scoring goals away to West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion.
“I can’t wait to be back playing. Last season was really tough with injury, and I wasn’t able to play as much. I have a lot of things to improve on. For me, it’s important to be at a good club where I feel at home and that’s the feeling I get here. I need to show who I am, show the real Karen and I cannot wait to do it.”
The defensive midfielder is currently in the process of recovering from hip surgery in late May that will hopefully put her period on the sidelines behind her. On her rehabilitation, Holmgaard said: “I’m recovering really well, my rehab is going as planned. My focus is step-by-step, day-by-day.
“Sara has helped me a lot in my rehab, we supported each other a lot last season when we were injured. There have been a lot of ups and downs so far but it’s going well and I’m excited to get started again with the girls.”
Everton manager Sorensen believes Holmgaard can play a significant role in bringing success to Everton. He told evertonfc.com: “It’s great Karen is continuing as an Everton player. Similar to Sara, she was unlucky with injuries last season but hopefully with her surgery in May, that is now behind her.
