New York Giants nation has been eagerly awaiting word from East Rutherford concerning the identity of the team’s new defensive coordinator. But despite a flow of seven names to filter out from various reports, there has been nothing announced as far as how head coach Brian Daboll plans to replaceink Martindale, and that has some Giants fans panicked.
Why? Because now that all of the NFL head coaching vacancies are filled, some believe the Giants will be forced to “settle” for a candidate that maybe otherwise wouldn’t have received serious consideration earlier.
At the same time, others are concerned that with the Shrine and Senior Bowl games being in the books, the Giants’ scouting work at those events was more generic than specific, given they don’t have direction from a defensive coordinator regarding what he wants.
It turns out that Giants fans need not worry about the scouting part of things, at least as far as General Manager Joe Schoen is concerned.
Schoen, who last week at the Senior Bowl told Alex Marvez and Bill Polian of SiriusXM NFL Radio that the team hoped to wrap up their defensive coordinator search by “the end of the week,” which has since come and gone, added that if the process takes a little bit longer, the team was going to be patient.
“Ideally, we’d like to have it done by the end of the week, but if we don’t, again, we’re gonna take our time and, you know, continue to find the best, you know, person for the job,” he said.
For those panicking over the time it’s taking to fill the role, Martindale, who resigned his post last month, wasn’t hired until February 11, 2022.
But what about the possibility that a new defensive coordinator might want to play a completely different scheme than what the Giants ran the last two years under Martindale?
Again, Schoen dismissed that concern, stressing that the Giants don’t necessarily acquire players who are best fit for just one type of scheme.
“(Hall of Fame Giants head coach) Bill Parcells always said coaches are gonna come and go, so you better draft the best players and not have a scheme-specific player,” Schoen said.
“I’ve always been very conscious of that, not to pigeonhole a player in only one scheme because there are changes in the NFL all the time. So whether it’s 4-3 or 3-4, I think we’ll have the personnel that we’ll be able to adjust to whichever scheme it is.”
